Mohanlal Viswanathan is one of the most celebrated and influential performers in Indian cinema. Fondly called “Lalettan” by millions of admirers, he has built an extraordinary career spanning nearly five decades, appearing in more than 400 films across Malayalam, Tamil, Telugu, Hindi and Kannada.
Born on 21 May 1960 in Elanthoor, Kerala, Mohanlal entered cinema with Manjil Virinja Pookkal in 1980, playing an antagonist. His natural screen presence soon helped him progress from supporting characters to leading roles. By the mid-1980s, he had become one of Malayalam cinema’s defining stars.
Mohanlal is widely admired for his subtle and instinctive acting style. He can communicate complex emotions through a glance, pause, smile or small physical gesture, making even extraordinary characters feel human. His range extends from comedy and romance to family drama, action, tragedy and psychological thrillers.
Films such as Kireedam, Bharatham, Vanaprastham, Devasuram, Spadikam, Manichitrathazhu, Iruvar, Thanmathra and Drishyam demonstrate the remarkable diversity of his work. His memorable characters are not merely performances; they have become part of Kerala’s language, humour and collective cultural memory.
Beyond acting, Mohanlal has worked as a producer, playback singer and director, making his directorial debut with the fantasy film Barroz. His work has also helped Malayalam cinema reach wider audiences across India and around the world.
His contributions have earned him five National Film Awards, several Kerala State Film Awards, the Padma Shri and the Padma Bhushan. In 2025, he received the Dadasaheb Phalke Award, India’s highest honour in cinema, recognising his exceptional contribution to the growth of Indian filmmaking.
